Destination guide - Spokane, Washington
Spokane, Washington

The urban hub of the Inland Northwest, Spokane is one of those cities you know is someplace special – spectacular scenery, incredible weather and a host of urban and outdoor activities.

The Spokane River has always been the area’s focal point. Historically, Native Americans were drawn to the spectacular Spokane Falls for their summer harvest of salmon. Later, power, provided by the falls, played a key role in establishing the City of Spokane. Today, crossing the scenic falls by gondola is only one of the many attractions in Riverfront Park, developed at the site of the 1974 Worlds Fair Expo. Park walkways and bridges connect with the Centennial Trail as it heads east to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, offering a quick escape from the urban core for joggers, bicyclists and pedestrians.

Just south of the river is Spokane’s growing downtown. River Park Square, a stylish mall featuring retailers like Nordstrom and Williams Sonoma, is connected via skywalks to shops and restaurants in the surrounding blocks. On the street, you’ll find yourself surrounded by historic architecture housing many excellent choices for enjoying a microbrew, local wine or gourmet meal; taking in the symphony or a Best of Broadway show; or browsing through a museum or gallery. If you’re set up for wireless communication, you’ll also learn why Spokane was named one of seven “Intelligent Communities” in 2003 for its vision in planning and implementing a Wireless Hot Zone throughout downtown.

In an area treasured for unlimited four-season recreation, Spokane also serves as the perfect jumping-off point to reach any of the region’s many clear lakes, national forests, and ski resorts. Tee off at some of the nation’s most acclaimed public golf courses, fly fish, kayak, bike or canoe along the banks of the Spokane River or ski some of the Northwest’s best powder. Whatever your pleasure, Spokane offers outdoor adventure within minutes of world-class urban amenities.
Did you know...
The name Spokane seems to be a good fit for the city that, in a 2001 study, was ranked number two in the nation for temperate weather. Taken from the Native American tribe that makes its home in the area, the name Spokane means "Children of the Sun."
