Eureka is well known for its classic Victorian architecture and, as one of America's "Best Small Arts Towns," a vibrant arts community. This lovely seaport has held onto its small-town character over the years, and its Old Town area has been carefully restored to its original 1800s splendor. Many of Eureka's frequent fairs and festivals take place on Old Town's tree-lined streets and its waterfront park, and walking and harbor tours offer visitors an in-depth look at the city's many attractions. The nearby towns of Arcata and Ferndale also feature charming historic downtown areas with plenty of shopping, dining and fine arts.
For history buffs, Eureka also offers several interesting museums. The Clark Memorial Museum features the country's best collection of basketry by Northern California tribes. Next to the waterfront boardwalk, the Humboldt Bay Maritime Museum operates its own cruise boat, the Madaket, which is one of the oldest passenger vessels in the country. The dynamic Humboldt Bay waterfront and boardwalk is also a great place to watch fishing boats and other watercraft coming and going.
The rough coastal mountains, dense redwood forests and perilous rocky shores once posed a formidable barrier to travelers. Today, these majestic trees and the rugged coastline are among the area's main attractions, offering unparalleled beauty, challenging recreation and a peaceful retreat from modern life. The many recreational opportunities include kayaking, fishing, golf, and much, much more.
