Idaho Falls owes its existence to the Snake River and the railroad. Historically a crossroads and resting place for travelers who were crossing the Snake River on their way to other places, Idaho Falls remains a great jumping-off point for travelers visiting Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks, Sun Valley, Henry's Lake, Craters of the Moon, the Sawtooth Mountains and several national forests.
Idaho Falls is also a beautiful city in its own right with a historic, hometown feel and a very active arts community. The waterfalls, created by a diversion dam in 1909, are the focal point of downtown and provide hydroelectric power. They are just one part of the 14-mile Snake River Greenbelt Park, which runs directly through town along the Snake River and is perfect for biking, jogging, in-line skating, walking or a leisurely afternoon stroll. The Greenbelt is also the site of summertime events like the Snake River Duck Race.
Nestled among the city’s historic streets and buildings are the merchants of the downtown area - quaint shops that offer distinctive merchandise, antiques, a cup of coffee or bowl of homemade soup. Also downtown is the Idaho Falls Cultural District with galleries, museums, studios and theaters.
