Destination guide - Denver, Colorado
Denver, Colorado

Blessed with 300 days of sunshine a year, Denver is a clean, young and green city whose love of the outdoors translates into over 200 parks, dozens of tree-lined boulevards, 90 golf courses and an incredible 650 miles of paved bike trails. Touted to be the highest educated and thinnest city in the country, the best place for cats and dogs and the city with the most baby boomers, Denver has burned to the ground, flooded, been hit by tornados and earthquakes but always comes back strong. It’s no surprise that the city’s heroes are John Elway – the greatest come-from-behind football king of all time, and Molly Brown – who proved unsinkable on the Titanic.

Denver’s vibrant downtown is centered around a mile-long pedestrian promenade lined with outdoor cafes and flower baskets. Some of the city's top attractions including the Denver Pavilions and Denver Art Museum are within easy walking distance. Architecture reflects the city's three boom periods: Victorian, when silver was discovered in Leadville; turn of the century, when gold was discovered in Cripple Creek; and contemporary, when the energy boom added skyscrapers to the downtown skyline. The mountain panorama visible from downtown is 120 miles long with 200 named peaks.

Lower Downtown, known as “LoDo,” offers one of the nation's greatest concentrations of Victorian buildings and warehouses, many of which have been refurbished to house restaurants, art galleries, offices, shops and the brew pubs and micro breweries that make Denver “the beer capital.” Downtown is also the home of Auraria Campus where three colleges have over 30,000 students, and Six Flags Elitch Gardens theme park, which is similar to Copenhagen's Tivoli Gardens.

For sports and outdoor enthusiasts, Denver is the smallest city to support seven professional sports teams. Outside of Denver, the Rockies await, filled with year-round opportunities for hiking, skiing and other outdoor adventures.

Did you know...
Being the “mile high city” has its ups and downs. The sky really is bluer and the sun feels warmer, but your lungs have to work harder. A lower boiling point means coffee is cooler and it takes four minutes to cook a three-minute egg.
