Looking at a map, Central Oregon may appear to be a few scattered towns surrounded by lots of arid land on the “other” side of the Cascades. But outdoor enthusiasts have long known that this high desert land is the perfect place for an amazing array of recreational activities, from hiking and rock climbing to whitewater rafting and skiing. Its ancient lava flows and other geologic formations make for beautiful scenery as well as for challenging outdoor activities. As word of this has gotten around, Bend and the nearby towns of Redmond and Sisters have become popular destinations for those seeking fun off the beaten track.
Bend celebrates its Centennial in 2005, and during this first hundred years it transformed itself dramatically. For decades its proximity to the Cascade Range fueled a burgeoning logging and timber processing industry. Now the city’s ranks are swelling again, and downtown Bend bustles with activity as residents and visitors enjoy the many dining, shopping and cultural attractions it offers. Some of the Northwest’s notable chefs have migrated here and brought their talents with them, as have artists, musicians and others seeking the new opportunities this region offers.
One look at what this other side of Oregon has to offer and you’ll soon understand why so many people call it “Oregon’s Playground” and, increasingly, home. Whether winter or summer, there’s always something exciting going on. You might not be able to enjoy everything on your first visit, but chances are you’ll want to come back to this friendly city again and again.
