Portland Oregon is known for its beauty, green spaces and close proximity to natural wonders. Over the years Portland has been recognized for being a city that embraces eco-friendly initiatives.
The Red Lion Hotel Portland - Convention Center is proud to be a part of Portland’s eco-friendly culture and is committed to being a hospitality leader in making Portland a greener place to live and play.
The following are our current sustainable
practices:
- We have a low cost transit pass program used by 64% of our associates.
- Our kitchens, lounge, restaurant, and banquets department compost our food waste daily
- We have an aggressive recycling program amongst our associates. We encourage doublesided
printing and have placed recycling containers in our lunch room and white rooms. We
collect disposable batteries, printer cartridges, glass and aluminum in our kitchens, and we
recently began recycling our corks in our food and beverage outlets. The Red Lion Hotel
Convention Center is Recycle at Work Certified— meaning our business has improved its
recycling practices and reduced the amount of waste it produces by implementing all of the
City of Portland’s five recycling steps.
- We participate in a linen reuse program in our guest rooms for both bath towels and bed
sheets.
- Our increased recycling and composting efforts have allowed us to reduce our garbage
service from three times per week to twice per week.
- We encourage our associates to turn off lights in unoccupied areas (lunch room, white rooms,
copy room, and luggage storage areas.)
- We order recycled content facial tissue, bath tissue, paper towels, and use green chemicals
when available.
- Partially used shampoo, conditioner, and lotions are collected and donated to the Portland
Rescue Mission.
- We continue to transition to compact fluorescent light bulbs where ever possible.
- We do our best to close guest room drapes in summer months to help our air conditioning
system work more efficiently.
- We are working closely with food and beverage outlets to reduce "single serve items" in
2010.
- Glasses and ceramic mugs are available in our guest rooms instead of disposable cups.
- We encourage all of our guests to use mass transit, reimbursing guests for MAX Light Rail
trips when coming in from the airport.
- We use low flow toilets, shower heads, and restrictors in all guest rooms.
- We recycle paint through the Metro Paint program.
- Most items produced for Red Lion by Sound Business Forms are currently printed on 30%
post consumer recycled waste paper. (Keycard folders, business cards, letterhead and
envelopes).
- Key cards are made out of PLA (corn based plastic)
- All new hires are shown a DVD, "Saving Little Pieces of Our Earth" prior to working a shift
to educate them about recycling.
